Red curtains can create an eye catching centrepiece for your rooms and work well in communal spaces in your home, like living rooms, dining rooms or kitchens. Often an intense and vibrant colour red can be used to help create atmosphere and mood in any room. Choose red curtain fabrics to enjoy eye-catching designs.

Our high-octane orange-tinted tones, like tomato, can make you feel energized and alive, while subtler, more old-fashioned purplish shades like burgundy in our Gypsy Garland - Damson fabric maroon and brick can evoke the cosy, insular vibe of, say, an 18th-century library. Either way, red is a statement curtain colour. 

Which fabrics are best for red curtains?

In an otherwise neutral palette, even a restricted amount of red can liven up a space.

The brightest red fabric is called Tomato which is on the Wild and Free, Little Fern, Life and Eternity Detail, and Stockholm Stripe designs. All of them incorporate our tomato red and can be used to make beautiful red curtains or curtains with red accents.

Raspberry red fabric is softer and a little more orange, making wonderful red curtains and blinds. See Fern and Dragonfly, and Little Leaf. If you didn't want a printed design, we also offer a Plain Linen Union in Raspberry. A subtle alternative of this is available in Soft Raspberry colour, seen on Sunflower, Sunflower Detail, Berries and Leaves, Dotty Check, Fine Foliage, Simple Ticking Detail fabrics.

Cranberry red fabrics have a bit of blue in them and go more towards a burgundy dark red. Cow Parsley, Dandelion Trellis, and Acorn and Leaf all have this lovely mellow red, warming up a room without being too strident making is a good choice for curtain fabric.

Red soft furnishing fabrics are warm. Cool greys, greens and warm blues are also possible complementary colours to use in a room to add interest.

Red stimulates the appetite, which makes it a perfect choice for the lead colour in a dining room palette. Any of my red fabrics would work in this type of room, but maybe especially Cranberry. Red adds drama to any room—even one as utilitarian as the kitchen.

What colours contrast and complement red curtains well?

If you’re familiar with the colour wheel, you know that green is exactly opposite of red, making it a complementary colour. Complementary colours tend to, well, complement each other, so green is a great choice to pair with reds. The fresh Apple Green mixed with Raspberry in Down to Earth, Stripe and Dash, and Paisley Ground designs.

A colour scheme of red, white, black, and grey make a stylish bedroom scheme. Red helps to punctuate the room with pillows, a throw, a rug, and even paintings. If you’re not ready to commit wholly, try red as an accent, pulling it in through trims or contrast leading edges on curtains, borders on blinds, cushions (be it piping), or an upholstered chair. See Down to Earth fabric which combines red with the neutral Limestone. Decorating tip: in a sitting room, pick a wall colour, like chocolate brown, to ground the red. Because the colour is so visually arresting, even one red upholstered chair or red cushion can transform a bland room. Red furnishings work well with pale and dark neutrals, dark wood, white walls, wooden floors, and natural stone.
